Statement regarding Concerns

November 8, 2022

To: Our Sylvania Schools Learning Community

From: Dr. Veronica Motley, Superintendent

It is not often that I respond to social media posts. However this past weekend, it appears social media served as a platform where individuals discussed a school-related matter. On behalf of our Board of Education, I am taking the opportunity to provide information related to the posted concerns.

Here are the facts:

  • On Thursday morning (11/3), we were alerted by a building principal that on Wednesday evening an individual approached one of our parents at the outside entrance of the building and asked that individual for a ride home following a meeting. This occurred around 8:00 p.m.

  • The principal did contact law enforcement as the situation seemed awkward with the individual roaming around the outside of the building.

  • Shortly after that communication, we received a call from Sylvania City Police informing us that the individual had trespassed on a couple of school properties around Northwest Ohio and over the past couple of weeks, and had also wandered into a residential garage and had been caught peeking into a residential window.

  • We also learned that the individual entered one of our school buildings after hours a couple of weeks prior while the building was open for community programming.

  • The police have been working with the individual to help him understand where boundaries are and the Sylvania Police Department recommended we file a trespass order for him on all school grounds/property.

  • The trespass order was completed and served to him. The District administrative team was notified through email and directed to share the information with their staff.  This same information was shared with Sylvania Recreation personnel as they use our buildings in the evenings. The email instructed individuals to contact law enforcement if they witnessed the individual on our property.

  • As we worked with law enforcement it was determined there was not a threat (direct or indirect) made on District property.

  • The trespass order was served to proactively keep the individual off of school property.

We recognize that many of our elementary buildings are open during evening hours for recreation type activities. We will review our procedures by working with our School Safety and Security Committee and will bring any and all recommendations to our Board of Education for consideration. Local law enforcement is represented on this committee. We appreciate our partnership with both Sylvania City and Sylvania Township law enforcement.

On a final note, despite the level of energy presented on social media this weekend, our District received a total of two inquiries regarding the individual of concern. We kindly remind our parents and/or community members who may have a concern, whether it be safety-related or another concern, to utilize the reference chart below. Following this protocol allows us to directly address your questions and concerns.
