Calamity Day Make-Up Plan 2013-14

Dear Parents:

The Weather Channel confirmed last week what we already knew. In a comparison of major cities across the country, Toledo was hit hardest by the historic winter of 2014. Record snowfalls and sustained bone-chilling cold led to 13 (HS/JH) and 14 (Elem) calamity days. With the recent passage of calamity day legislation by the Ohio General Assembly, Sylvania Schools is required to make-up 4 (HS/JH) and 5 (Elem) days.

During the process of determining how to make-up these days, two factors rose to the top:

1. recouping instructional time during April in front of the Ohio Achievement Assessments and Advanced Placement testing windows; 2. completing the last day of school for students by Friday, June 6. The district plan for making-up the required number of school days consists of the following blended approach:

  • Convert the three remaining professional development late starts to instructional time. (1 day)
  • For 11 days starting after spring break, the instructional day will be lengthened one hour at the end of each day. (2 days)

April 7-10 (Monday thru Thursday)

April 14-16 (Monday thru Wednesday)

April 21-24 (Monday thru Thursday)

  • Add one instructional day to the end of the school year for high school and junior high students and two instructional days for elementary students. The adjusted last days of school will be Thursday, June 5, 2014 (HS/JH) and Friday, June 6, 2014 (Elem). (1 and 2 days)

Any shift in schedules can present challenges. Parents can work through unique situations with their principals. Thank you to parents, staff members and students for being flexible as we implement a plan in the aftermath of an unprecedented winter.
