Sylvania Schools Leads the Way in Safety and Security

At Sylvania Schools, student and staff safety is our top priority, and we continue to lead the way with comprehensive, proactive measures that set the standard for school safety across the region.

Working closely with the Sylvania  City and Township Police and Fire Departments, Our Sylvania Schools has implemented a multi-layered safety plan focused on prevention, protection, and preparedness. Every building is equipped with secure vestibules, upgraded door hardware, advanced camera systems, and real-time communication tools that strengthen our emergency response.

Equally important, our staff participate in ongoing training, threat-assessment practices, and safety drills conducted in partnership with local law enforcement. These joint efforts ensure that our readiness remains strong throughout the year.

We also understand that safety extends beyond physical security. Our School Resource Officers, counselors, and student support teams help ensure every student feels connected, supported, and cared for.

Through teamwork, technology, and trust, Sylvania Schools continues to model what it means to create a safe, welcoming learning environment for all. Together with our community partners, we remain steadfast in our promise: Safety first—always.

District Safety and Security Overview (Click to Expand)

Sylvania Schools is dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students, staff, and visitors. To achieve this, we maintain a comprehensive safety and security program built on preparedness, prevention, and partnerships.

The Sylvania Schools Safety & Security Committee was established in 2011 and meets as a large group bi-monthly, allowing sub-committees to meet in the off months. Teachers, support staff, administrators, parents, as well as representatives from local law enforcement and fire departments, and the Ohio School Safety Center are on the committee.

  • As a committee, we will carry on with implementing new plans, procedures, and programs with a best practice approach, as well as critically re-evaluating existing safety and security efforts to date.

  • Safety Audits: Routine inspections and vulnerability assessments are conducted to ensure compliance with state safety requirements.
  • Emergency Operations Planning: Each building maintains a plan aligned with Ohio Revised Code and the state’s School Safety Center guidelines. In addition, each building has After-School Emergency Operation Plans for commonly used areas, including gyms, fields, theaters, and the pool.

  • Students participate in mandated safety drills (fire, tornado, evacuation, lockdown) in compliance with Ohio law.

Prevention and Support
  • Anti-bullying programs and PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) are implemented district-wide.
  • A comprehensive district crisis plan is in place and reviewed annually to ensure readiness and alignment with best practices.
  • The district employs social workers as a proactive safety measure, providing early support and intervention to help students address challenges before they become barriers to learning or well-being.
  • Mental health partnerships ensure access to counseling and intervention services.
  • The Ohio Safer School Line is a free, anonymous tip line available 24/7 for students, parents, and staff to report safety concerns, including threats, bullying, or suspicious behavior.
  • Threat assessment protocols are used to identify and address concerns proactively.  Each of our 12 schools has a Threat Assessment Team that has gone through Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines (CSTAG) training, along with a district-level team.
  • A monitoring system is in place to track internet activity on district-issued devices and send notifications when necessary.
  • The district complies with all requirements of House Bill 123. This law, also known as the “Safety and Violence Education (SAVE) Students Act,” requires schools to provide age-appropriate instruction in suicide awareness and prevention, safety training, and violence prevention. As part of this mandate, our district implements prevention programs, staff training, and student supports to promote a safe and healthy learning environment.
