What is a typical pathway an incoming 9th grader would follow for earning English credits?
Incoming freshmen usually complete English 9, but they may choose from English 9 or Honors English 9.
Which English courses are required for graduation?
Southview students must complete four credits of English to graduate, and those four required credits include English 9 or Honors English 9, English 10 or Honors English 10, and American Literature or AP Language and Composition for juniors. Seniors may choose from three different English courses: Creative Writing Focus, College and Career English, or AP Literature and Composition.
How many AP courses does the English department offer?
Southview students can complete the two English AP courses offered by the College Board: AP Language and Composition and AP Literature and Composition.
What about electives?
Most English department offers electives associated with journalism, communication, and the performing arts. Students may take courses like Journalism Writing and Design, Yearbook, Oral Communications, Honors Oral Communications, Theatre Workshop, Drama, Advanced Drama, and Debate. Students may also take a Test Prep course to help them with various standardized and classroom test occasions.
Does the English department have any clubs or extracurricular activities associated with it?
A Southview student wishing to explore and apply the content of English classes can join Mock Trial, Speech and Debate, and our new literary magazine, The Last Word. They can also become part of the staff for the Catalyst, our school newspaper, or the Meridian, our yearbook. Finally, students can take advantage of the play and musical theatre productions offered every year, either as actors or production staff.
