Early Childhood Learning Standards and Curriculum

From the Ohio Department of Education website: On June 15, 2022, the State Board of Education adopted Ohio’s Early Learning and Development Standards in all domains of school readiness to reflect the comprehensive development of children beginning at birth to the end of preschool. These standards replace previous versions of Ohio’s early childhood education standards and represent a collaboration between state agencies serving young children including the Ohio Department of Education, Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Ohio Department of Health, Ohio Department of Mental Health, Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities, and the Governor’s Office of Health Transformation. The state agencies worked with national experts and writing teams made up of Ohio-based content experts and stakeholders to revise and expand the standards.

To teach the early learning standards, the Sylvania School’s preschool program implements The Creative Curriculum, Handwriting Without Tears, Second Step, Heggerty and uses Conscious Discipline.

  • The Creative Curriculum for Preschool is an award-winning curriculum for preschool success. Comprised of The Foundation, five research-based volumes that provide the knowledge base of the curriculum, and the Daily Resources, which offer step-by-step guidance in the form of Teaching Guides and additional daily teaching tools. For more information, visit Creative Curriculum for Preschool

  • The Handwriting Without Tears (HWT) curriculum was adopted by Sylvania Schools in 2005 to support PRE-writing and printing skills in preschool.  It is a developmentally based program which is consistent with the Ohio Department of Education’s Early Learning & Developmental Standards (2012). • The Second Step: We use Second Step curriculum to teach social-emotional and self-regulation skills through weekly themes using puppets, books, music and visual aids. For more information, visit Second Step

  • Heggerty: Through modeling and scaffolding support, teachers help children learn to hear the sounds in words (phonemic awareness). For more information, please visit Heggerty

  • Conscious Discipline®:  Conscious Discipline is a comprehensive classroom management program and a social-emotional curriculum, created by Dr. Becky Bailey. It is based on current brain research, child development information, and developmentally appropriate practices. Conscious Discipline operates on a basis of creating physical and psychological safety for children.  Research shows that the brain functions optimally in a safe, stimulating environment, which is a principle at the program's core.
